Origins and Growth.
Ariaria International Market is located in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. It was established in 1976 following a devastating fire that razed the former Ekeoha Market, prompting the government to relocate traders to a swampy area on the outskirts of town. Despite its humble beginnings, Ariaria blossomed into a commercial powerhouse.
Why It’s Called “China of Africa.
The market earned this nickname due to its massive output of locally made goods, especially footwear, leather products, and garments. Traders and artisans in Ariaria are known for their ingenuity, producing high-quality items that rival imported goods. These products are distributed across Nigeria and exported to neighboring countries.
